He lived a sinless life and offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He rose from the dead after three days and demonstrated his power and victory over sin and death. He ascended to heaven to be beside the Father. From there he will one day return to earth to exercise judgment. Jesus lives and rules eternally as King of kings and Lord of lords Matthew ,23; Isaiah ; John ; ; Hebrews ,15; 1 Corinthians ,4; Romans ,4; Acts ; 1 Timothy ,15; Titus We believe that the Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son in power, authority, and majesty.

The Message Of Grace (61-0827)

Since we cannot by our own thoughts or choices believe in Christ or come to him, the Holy Spirit calls us to faith through the good news of Jesus Christ. He makes us aware of our sin and deep need for Christ. He also draws us to Christ by working through the Word of God and Baptism.

The Son of Glory

After drawing us to faith, the Holy Spirit then carries out the work of renewing us through Word and Sacrament—giving us power for Christian living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is pleasing to God. As Christians, we strive to live under his influence daily 2 Corinthians ; John ; ,17; Acts ; 1 Corinthians ; ; Ephesians ; Galatians ; Ephesians It was written by human authors, but this was done under the supernatural influence of the Holy Spirit, a process called inspiration.

The Bible is the source of the message of eternal salvation through Jesus Christ. It is the source of all truth for Christian beliefs and living. Being inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Bible is completely free of mistakes, errors, or contradictions 2 Timothy ; 2 Peter ,21; 2 Timothy ; Psalm ; ,; Proverbs We believe people were originally created in the spiritual image of God and were sinless and holy.

Since the fall of mankind into sin, this is no longer true. Now, all people are born sinful and are constantly inclined to sin by nature. We are spiritually lost and dead apart from Jesus Christ. However, through faith in Christ we are newly born and are given the ability to serve God, live for his purposes, and enjoy his blessings Genesis ; Romans ; Psalm ; Ephesians ; Luke 15; ; John ; Romans ,2; 2 Corinthians As such, creation itself is a grace, since God did not have to create—we were not owed the gift of existence.

For the grace of Christ heals, perfects, and elevates our human nature, enabling us to participate in the divine nature, in a manner that transcends merely what we have in creation. Salvation is about the gift of divine life, given to us in the Holy Spirit. We are truly begotten anew in baptism, and this divine life develops within us in a dynamic way, as the Holy Spirit continues his ongoing transformation of our lives.

In Christ, we come to share in his eternal filial relation to the Father—we become sons in the Son. Irenaeus, Athanasius, and Thomas Aquinas, respectively:. As we can see, salvation is far more than just forgiveness of sins—far more than merely a divine acquittal. Salvation is about divine sonship—our coming to share in the Eternal Sonship of Jesus Christ through the power of the Spirit.

Again, natural perfection could not earn one drop of this—it is the gift of grace, the gift of new birth and new life. The nineteenth-century German theologian, Matthias Scheeben, captures this well, explaining that the motive for the Incarnation is ultimately not just about atoning for sin, but extending to us the gift of divine sonship:. It is the bridge leading to the extension of the divine Trinitarian fatherhood to the race.

The Incarnation raises the human race to the bosom of the eternal Father that it may receive the grace of sonship with all its implied dignities and rights by a real contact with the source, rather than by a purely gratuitous influx from without Mysteries of Christianity , , emphasis added. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear but you have received the spirit of sonship. By nature , we are servants and creatures of the Most High. By grace , we become sons and daughters in the Eternal Son.

Once we see the reality of the grace of the New Covenant—that it takes us into the inner trinitarian life of God—we realize how pale some presentations of the gospel really are. Sometimes Christianity is presented as merely a moral and political enterprise—as if it were just about maintaining a certain moral code. Of course, a moral code is part of Christianity. For God to come so far—to unite himself so closely to us—means that his goal is not just to deal with sin but to infuse us with divine life; to elevate us into his inner life, a truly hypostatic and trinitarian order.

I still like the book even though short stories isn't my favorite genre. Apr 22, Erwin Sanders rated it really liked it. The story," Sons of Grace," written and edited by Mark Hughes, has managed to cause me to truly think about my life. Many people go through life either thinking about how hard they have it or not caring at all.

God’s Grace

In some ways it can be understandable that not caring about your problems is the best thing to do but unfortunately if you do not recognize your own problems, then you won't be able to help with other problems. This book is a compilation of a group of guy's memoirs. Some of the struggles The story," Sons of Grace," written and edited by Mark Hughes, has managed to cause me to truly think about my life. Some of the struggles that the men have been through in this story can be ridiculed and judged, but is that really the purpose of sharing ever? In my opinion some of the characters had a much harder life and it was because of the environment around them.

What I mean by that is that they were things that they could not control. For example, one of the characters was tormented by his father daily. He showed no mercy when he explained the horrid things his father would do to him. The dad challenged the boy in almost every way, causing him to reach a numbness to were he can withstand almost anything his father could dish out at him. Another very interesting character was this man who unfortunately lost his son to a diving accident. A religious man received a call from one of their son's friends from china, who informed them that their youngest son had drowned after smashing his head against the side of the boat.

The father had already been worry some of his son because he had lived so far away and now hearing this news shattered his entire aspect of God. Definitely a good read. Oct 31, Jack rated it really liked it.
